Day 3 – Meal B and the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11
I’ve always been fascinated by space food, i mean it’s SPACE food! When I was 12 years old and ate powdered space friendly ice cream for the first time it changed my life. It was chocolate flavored. Thinking about eating only space food for a considerable amount of time made me wonder how spacemen really ate. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum explains, “Each Apollo crew member was provided with three meals per day which provided approximately 2,800 calories per day. The food was freeze-dried and was easily reconstituted by the astronaut with a water probe which dispensed one half ounce of hot or cold water as required, each time the trigger button was pressed. The food was protected with a 4-ply, laminated film coating and also had an 8-quinolinol sulfate tablet attached to reduce spoilage.”
An exhibition commemorating the first human steps on the moon is currently on view at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

His hyper-ethereal poetic expression portrays youthful eroticised figures living in modern suburban settings. While the hues in Schmidberger’s paintings are deep and saturated, his color pencil on paper drawings are a blown-out wash of muted pastels, adding a hazy sun-bleached, mythological quality to his work.
